As of this Thursday, 60 deaths have been recorded in people with covid-19 (17 more than on Wednesday) and 3,544 confirmed cases of infection in Portugal – an 18% increase in the number of cases compared to the previous day. The figures appear in the epidemiological bulletin of the Directorate-General for Health (DGS), which updates the data daily. There are still 191 people hospitalized and 61 people hospitalized in intensive care (the same number as on Wednesday); in all, 43 people recovered (almost double since the last balance sheet). On Wednesday, 43 deaths and 2995 infected had been reported in Portugal.
As for fatal victims, 80% were over 70 years old. Four deaths were also recorded in people aged between 50 and 59 years and eight of the men who died were between 60 and 69 years old.
The northern region is the one with the most cases of infection: there are 1858, with 28 registered deaths. This is followed by the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region, with 1082 identified cases (and 18 deaths). More than 1102 tests have been done since the last bulletin.
At midnight this Thursday a new plan to address covid-19 entered into force in Portugal to respond to the mitigation phase the country is in – when there is local transmission in a closed environment and community transmission. “It is not [uma transmissão comunitária] exuberant or uncontrolled, but it exists ”, said Graça Freitas on Wednesday. This phase corresponds to the highest alert and response level, this being the most serious phase of contagion.
With the new rules, applied to the entire health system (public, private and social), there will be widespread testing and care for covid-19 patients with all hospitals providing care and health centers. And with most of the patients being followed at home.
