Coronavirus in Europe, the percentage of positives on swabs rises. In France and Spain they are 10%

In the last week in Italy about 805,000 swabs have been analyzed, never so many since the beginning of the pandemic. Almost 32 thousand of these sono positive results: around 4%, with the peak of 5.4% on Monday. According to the parameters of the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, it is starting to be a high rate, quickly doubling compared to the 2% held until the beginning of October but far from the percentages of spring (April 1, with 4,700 cases, the positive swabs were the 14% of the total).

The less comforting news is therefore that new infections have increased more than the number of tests, which as we will see in our country is rising more slowly than in other large European countries. It is also true that compared to Italy there are many countries in more critical situations, not only in terms of absolute numbers (the 27,000 cases in France on Saturday, or the over 100 deaths per day in Spain since the end of September), but also for swab positivity rate: in the last week Paris reports more than 9 infected out of 100 tests nationwide (in which he analyzed nearly 1.1 million), with one peak of 17% of positives in the Ile-de-France area, between the capital and the suburbs, where one third of the 1,500 seriously ill Covid-19 patients across the country are now hospitalized in intensive care. We can’t rule out anything – Prime Minister Jean Castex said – seen what we are seeing in our hospitals: if the beds in intensive care are still full we will have to take more stringent measures.

Also Spain finds one infected swab in every 10, which become almost 2 in the Madrid area (18% positive). It goes similarly in Hungary and Romania, with 10% positive swabs, again worse in the Netherlands (12 infections out of 100 tests) and especially in the Czech Republic and Ukraine. The Prague Health Ministry on Friday announced 8,600 cases in one day, and double the hospitalizations a week earlier, with a positive swab rate of 17,3%; Kiev has started to report more than 5,000 new infections a day, with deaths reaching hundreds every 24 hours, for a share of positive swabs of the 19.4%, the highest in Europe.

Germany is doing very well, having to do 70 swabs to find a positive one (1.4%), and is also holding its own UK: 5.4 out of 100 tests are infected, but the number of swabs is very high. London is able to process up to 300,000 tests per day (in Italy the record was 133,000, last Saturday), with a total of over 25 million tampons since March (double of our country). And if in this second wave that sees the numbers in Europe grow for 77 days we have been able to contain the virus better than others, on the swabs there are those who have done more: Great Britain (which detaches all the large with 3.5 tests per day per thousand inhabitants in the last week), but also Belgium (3), Spain (2), France and Germany (1.9), while Italy – which has more than doubled its percentages since August – stops at 1.76. Like the Czech Republic.
