Coronavirus, containment and telework: Netflix reduces its speeds

Because of
different containment measures taken in European countries, and
telecommuting, the demand for Internet capacity has logically increased. For
relieve connections, Netflix has made a decision: to reduce its speeds.

The
streaming platform has indeed reduced the bit rates on all its streams
Europe for 30 days to ease pressure on the Internet, announced on Thursday
March 19 CEO Reed Hasting.

“Netflix
decided to start reducing bit rates on all our flows in Europe
for 30 days. We estimate that this will reduce Netflix traffic on European networks by around 25% while ensuring a service of
good quality to our members
“said Reed Hasting.

The
Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton had called on Wednesday the
broadcast platforms and operators to take steps to alleviate
pressure
weighing on the Internet to facilitate remote work and
online education during the confinement period imposed in countries
from Europe to fight the spread of Covid-19.
