134 more dead in New York – “If you don’t get by without a ventilator after a short time, you don’t have a good chance of surviving”
The death toll from Covid-19 continues to rise in New York. Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Friday that a total of 134 people had died in the past 24 hours from the effects of the virus – a total of 519 corona deaths in the state, by far the majority in the United States.
Some of yesterday’s fatalities had been ventilated for three or four weeks. Given the number of people already in critical condition, it is expected that the death toll will continue to rise. “If you don’t get along without a ventilator after a short time, you don’t have a good chance of surviving,” says Cuomo. On the positive side, however, a total of 528 people with severe illnesses were able to leave the New York hospitals in the past 24 hours.
Cuomo also announced that New York schools will be closed for two weeks longer than originally decided – now until April 15th. “New York is so badly affected for two reasons,” said the governor: “People from all over the world visit our city, came from China, from South Korea. We are also a very densely populated metropolis – social distancing is hardly possible in normal New York everyday life, ”says Cuomo.
With no embellishments, the Democrat emphasized that the restrictions in New York will continue for “weeks and weeks”. “It will be hard, ugly and sad”. The enemy – the corona virus – attacks the weakest, that’s what makes the situation so cruel. “We are in a historical moment that will be spoken and written about for generations.
