Corona situation in Germany: RKI warns of major events

Status: 11.11.2021 9:44 p.m.

In view of the corona situation, the Robert Koch Institute advises canceling or avoiding larger events and reducing unnecessary contacts. At 50,196, the number of new infections is higher than ever since the beginning of the pandemic.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) continues to classify the current corona development as “very worrying”. It advises “urgently to cancel or avoid larger events if possible, but also to reduce all other unnecessary contacts”. That goes from the current one Weekly report of the institute emerged. “If they cannot be avoided, regardless of the vaccination or convalescence status, you should do a test beforehand and use the Corona warning app.”

Even vaccinated and convalescent people should wear masks, keep their distance and regularly ventilate rooms in which there are several people. In the case of respiratory illnesses such as runny nose or cough, it is “absolutely necessary” for all people, including those who have been vaccinated, to stay at home, but also to contact a family doctor and have a PCR test done there.

Over 50,000 new infections within a day

The number of new corona infections has risen sharply and exceeded 50,000 for the first time during the pandemic. The health authorities in Germany reported the maximum value of 50,196 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. This is evident from the numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard from 3:40 a.m. on Thursday.

The previous day there were 39,676 infections and exactly one week ago the value was 33,949 infections. The value on Wednesday was already a high.

Also seven-day incidence at its peak

The nationwide seven-day incidence is also increasing. The RKI gave the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week on Thursday morning at 249.1. It has thus risen to a high for the fourth day in a row. On Wednesday the value was 232.1.

For comparison: a week ago the incidence was 154.5 (previous month: 66.5). According to the new information, 235 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 165 deaths. The RKI has counted 4,894,250 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected.

“The current number of cases is already higher than all the values recorded so far at the peak of the previous wave of illness,” said the RKI in its weekly report.

Hospitalization incidence at 4.65

The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days – the most important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions – the RKI stated on Thursday 4.65 (Tuesday: 4.31).

With the indicator it must be taken into account that hospital admissions are sometimes reported with delay. A nationwide threshold, from when the situation can be viewed critically, is not provided for the incidence of hospitalization, among other things because of large regional differences. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.

The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at 4,432,600. The number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 97,198.

Karagiannidis: The situation is underestimated

Christian Karagiannidis, scientific director of the intensive care register of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI), said in an interview with tagesschau24, the situation was generally underestimated.

One had the feeling that the corona pandemic was over, fueled, for example, by the debate about the end of the pandemic situation. At least in Bavaria, Thuringia and Saxony, the increase in cases is exponential: “That hurts us enormously at the moment,” said Karagiannidis.

Appeal to the population

The RKI assumes that “the strong increase in the number of cases will continue within the next few weeks if the population does not help by voluntarily reducing potentially infectious contacts in the private sphere and observing the basic measures in all other areas of life to reduce all, vaccinated and unvaccinated persons “.

Share of vaccinated people hardly increased

Until November 9th, 70 percent of the population will continue to be vaccinated at least once and 67 percent will be fully vaccinated. This means that the proportion of people who have been vaccinated has hardly increased in the last few weeks. “According to the current state of knowledge, all vaccines that are currently available in Germany effectively protect the vast majority of vaccinated people from serious illness if they are fully vaccinated”, according to the RKI.

Christine Falk, President of the German Society for Immunology, how dangerous is the current corona situation?

tagesschau24 EXTRA, 11.11.2021

The unvaccinated people are very threatened in the current situation, emphasized Christine Falk, President of the German Society for Immunology, in an interview with Tageschau24. In the case of infections, this particularly affects five to 19-year-olds. “But even the older groups – if they are not vaccinated – are exposed to a high risk of becoming infected because so much virus can move around in society,” said Falk.
