New York is tightening the reins on vaccination. City officials will be given a choice starting in September. There is no obligation to vaccinate. Nevertheless, the authorities hope to convince those who hesitate to immunize with gentle pressure.

DThe city of New York is requiring its city officials to be vaccinated against the coronavirus by mid-September. Otherwise, they would have to be tested weekly in the future, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Monday. Around 340,000 employees are affected, including teachers and police officers. New York is one of the largest employers in the US to take such a step. A few hours after the announcement, the authorities in California announced a similar move.
There, all government officials and all healthcare workers must provide proof of vaccination against the corona virus. Otherwise, they must also be tested weekly. According to the authorities, the move will come into effect in August. According to official figures, the most populous US state has at least 238,000 public sector employees and at least two million public and private health workers.
The decision of individuals not to get vaccinated is now affecting “the rest of us in profound and devastating and deadly ways,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said. Anyone who does not present proof of vaccination must also continue to wear a mask at work.

Nobody is forced to be vaccinated. The authorities hope, however, that many of those who have been hesitant to date will find the weekly tests too complicated and uncomfortable and will decide to get vaccinated after all. “It’s about our recovery. It’s about what we have to do to bring New York City back,” de Blasio said.
The target date there, September 13, coincides with the start of school after the holidays. The Democratic Mayor has announced that all students will then return to full-time classroom instruction. De Blasio said there are no plans to reintroduce a comprehensive indoor mask requirement as imposed by Los Angeles County.
