Corona: All students in SH can test themselves from Monday | NDR.de – News – Schleswig-Holstein

All students in Schleswig-Holstein can test themselves for the corona virus from Monday, March 22nd. The tests are carried out under supervision in the schools.

For Education Minister Karin Prien, the self-tests are a building block in the fight against pandemics.

All schoolchildren in Schleswig-Holstein can test themselves for the coronavirus once a week in school from next Monday (March 22nd). Education Minister Karin Prien (CDU) described the self-tests, which are possible under supervision and only with the consent of the parents, as “a further building block for maintaining teaching”. The offer is initially valid until the Easter holidays. As announced, the first 230,000 tests were delivered to the school authorities today, and another 380,000 are to follow on Saturday, according to Prien.

The country had hoped for home self-tests

The tests are voluntary and are carried out by the students themselves. To do this, you have to twist a longer cotton swab in your nose, among other things. Originally, the country had hoped for self-tests at home, but because of the packaging in boxes of 25, you had to reschedule. “We had two options,” explained the Minister of Education: “Either we put our hands on our laps and wait for the perfect solution. Or we tackle it and say: We test.” The schools have been informed and information material suitable for children has been made available, according to Prien: “We assume that the children can take the tests.”

General Practitioners Association: What happens after a positive test result?

The Schleswig-Holstein General Practitioner Association is of the opinion that the students can do the self-tests well on their own. With the technical evaluation of the tests, the students – at least at the beginning – have to get help, said the chairman of the association, Thomas Maurer. At the same time, he would like even clearer answers to the question of what should happen if a self-test is positive.

Education Minister Prien had previously stated that if a self-test was positive, a PCR test would have to be carried out to confirm the result. Affected students would have to go home and should call 116 117.

GEW: The teachers’ load limit has been reached

According to the Education and Science Union (GEW), the voluntary Corona self-tests mean a bit more security for schools. State chairwoman Astrid Henke also made it clear that the teachers had reached their limits. The school administrators now have even more to do by organizing the self-tests.

The self-tests in schools are an additional offer to the option that everyone in Schleswig-Holstein already has: one free corona test per week, for example in test centers or participating pharmacies.

Teachers have other options

In February, the state government gave teachers and other school staff the opportunity to voluntarily be tested for a possible virus infection twice a week – regardless of the occasion and free of charge. The antigen tests are carried out in DRK test centers, in pharmacies or by general practitioners. A certificate from the employer is always required.
