Comparing iPhone 14 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro Max: What’s New and Is It Worth the Upgrade?

The iPhone 15 Pro Max came with some innovations compared to the previous generation model, the iPhone 14 Pro Max. The increase in zoom to five times — for quality photography even from a distance —, the change of material to titanium and the inclusion of USB-C port are among the functions that Apple has included from one generation to the next. But these differences take their toll: while the iPhone 14 Pro Max is sold from R$ 8.999 on Amazon, the latest cell phone is sold for R$ 9.899 in the same marketplace.

The improvements implemented by Apple affect the user experience with the device. With the adoption of titanium material, for example, the iPhone 15 Pro Max became lighter and more resistant — at least this is Apple’s promise. The arrival of the USB-C port, in turn, allows you to use the same charger for all Apple devices. There are also more robust innovations, such as the inclusion of Ray Tracing technology in the Bionic A17 Pro processor. See, in the following list, five functions that only the iPhone 15 Pro Max has.

1. Titanium body

One of the changes presented by the new iPhone 15 Pro Max is the change in the material used in the cell phone’s body. Apple chose to replace the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s stainless steel with titanium. The change aims to ensure more resistance to the smartphone. According to the company, titanium has a better relationship between strength and weight compared to other metal alloys used in cell phones. There is even speculation that the new Galaxy S24 will also come with the material.

It is worth noting that the new generation of iPhone has reduced weight, even with an increase in battery and no change in screen size. The iPhone 15 Pro Max weighs 221 grams — 19 grams less than the previous model. However, tests carried out by YouTuber Sam Kohl, from the Apple Track portal, demonstrated the lower durability of the iPhone 15 Pro Max in drop tests when compared to the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

2. USB-C input

The Lightning connector, present since 2012, was officially abandoned by Apple with the launch of the iPhone 15, which brought a USB-C port. This type of connection was already available on the iPad and MacBook, and its adoption was expected by the market, since the European Union imposed a measure that unified the USB type-C input as a standard for cell phones by 2024. The measure was beneficial for owners of Apple devices, since, from now on, it will be possible to use the same accessories as chargers for the entire Apple ecosystem.

Another point of improvement is the data transfer speed. While the Lightning connector had transfer speeds of up to 480 Mb/s, USB type C can reach rates of up to 10 Gb/s. The new type of connector also supports the DisplayPort protocol, for connecting the cell phone to mirror audio and video directly on 4K monitors.

3. 5x zoom

Another new feature is the optical zoom with up to five times zoom. This is a huge improvement for Apple compared to the previous generation, which was only three times closer. In practice, having an iPhone 15 Pro Max allows you to take photos with more details and higher quality, even from a distance. This function should be very useful for situations where it is not possible to get physically close to what will be photographed, such as artists on stage at a show.

A camera’s optical zoom defines how far the lens can zoom in to take photos and film footage. With it, the objects or people photographed are enlarged without loss of quality. Optical zoom tends to be better than digital zoom, since, in the latter, the pixels are “stretched” in an artificial way.

4. Spatial mode video recording

Recording videos in spatial mode is a major advancement brought by Apple to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. With the feature, it is possible to record 3D videos using the ultra-angle and wide-angle cameras to create the sensation of three-dimensionality and immersion in the records. With the new feature, Apple’s focus is to record special moments that can be revisited.

To watch videos produced in spatial mode, you must purchase an Apple Vision Pro, the brand’s mixed reality headset. This type of video, when projected onto the headset, should lead to a feeling of ambiance at the moment recorded, with depth of image and audio in the projected space.

5. Bionic A17 Pro processor with Ray Tracing technology

The latest generation of Apple’s mobile processors brought an unprecedented aspect to the brand’s smartphones: the hardware-accelerated Ray Tracing feature. This technology is similar to that seen in computer video cards and promises to bring smoother graphics and more immersive experiences with augmented reality and games.

Ray Tracing is a type of 3D graphics rendering that seeks to reproduce lights and shadows with greater fidelity. This means that games that benefit from technology should display more realistic effects on the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Among the titles possibly included are Resident Evil Village, Resident Evil 4, Death Stranding Director’s Cut and Assassin’s Creed Mirage.
