Coach banned from Tokyo after horse abuse: ‘Hit him hard!’ | Sport

sport">The association did this in response to video images showing how Raisner seems to beat the horse Saint Boy, ridden by Annika Schleu, with her fist during the horseback riding part of the modern women’s pentathlon. That action was in violation of the UIPM rules, the union reports.

sport">For pentathlon star Schleu, the gold was within reach, but the horse she had received on loan refused several times. Schleu therefore failed to score points and finished in 31st place.

sport">Afterwards, the athlete and national coach Raisner faced heavy criticism. “Hit him hard! Hit him!” she had yelled at Schleu – clearly audible on television. The visibly shaken athlete then desperately whipped the wavering horse.

sport">In the modern pentathlon, participants must ride a horse that is assigned by lottery. The athlete is given 20 minutes of preparation time to get used to that horse. The test itself is a jumping course.

sport">Due to the decision, Raisner will not be able to supervise the modern men’s pentathlon competition.

Racist statements

sport">Earlier this Games, German cycling coach Patrick Moster was provisionally suspended after racist statements. He crossed the line when he urged time trialist Nikias Arndt to overtake “that camel driver.” Two Africans had started for the German cyclist: Amanuel Ghebreigzabhier from Eritrea and the Algerian Azzedine Lagab.
