City will give free more than 70 thousand air conditioning units

Mayor Bill de Blasio assured that more than 70,000 air conditioners will be installed for free throughout the city to cope with the heat wave in the midst of the pandemic.

This is part of the district’s home energy assistance program and more than 4,500 units have been installed so far, the mayor reported Friday.

Another 25,000 people have signed up for the program, always according to the mayor.

To access the benefit you must have a valid social number, be over 60 years old or receive assistance from Snap or live in a housing subsidized by the government.

You or someone at home must prove a chronic medical condition and be listed as a low-income household.

At the moment this help is only for citizens or legal residents of the country, but a family could qualify with only one member who has legal immigration status.

Residents of public and subsidized housing will get a call to see if they need the help, Assemblyman Felix Ortiz told us of the program that will help his district.

“If they don’t get any notification and they have that low income, they live in nycha or not those people can call 311 and register and make sure they can get the air conditioning,” Ortiz said.

In homes where air conditioning equipment cannot be installed safely, a fan will be provided and whatever cooling system donated will not exceed a cost of $ 800.

Applications will be accepted until funds are exhausted. You can register online and find more information about the requirements at https://access.nyc.gov/es/programs/cooling-assistance-benefit/
