Chronology of Elderly Driver Killed by Mobs for Suspected Thief, This is Police Explanation

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.TVA car driver died after being beaten by a mob on Jalan Pulokambing, Cakung, East Jakarta, Sunday (23/1/2022) early in the morning. The mob ganged up on the driver because he was a suspected thief.

Cakung Police Chief Kompol Satria Darma in an investigation at the crime scene (TKP) said the condition of the car was heavily damaged.

“For the vehicle is already in a state of serious damage,” he explained to Compass TV, Sunday.

While the investigation was conducted, the victims were panicked by the crowd, driving vehicles to the East Jakarta area via Jatinegara and stopping at the JIEP area, Cakung.

“We immediately processed the crime scene. We are still coordinating with related parties because the initial crime scene was in South Jakarta. We continue to develop it with existing witnesses from Tebet to Cakung,” he continued.

Regarding the victims who died in the mob beatings, Satria said the bodies had been taken to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Central Jakarta for an autopsy.

“We (the victim) are still submitting it to the RSCM, we are just waiting for the results of the post-mortem or autopsy,” he said.

Beating Victims Not Thieves

Head of the East Jakarta Police Criminal Investigation Unit AKBP Ahsanul Muqaffi emphasized that the car driver who was beaten by the masses for allegedly stealing a vehicle was in fact not a thief, as in the viral video narration on social media.

It is known that the victim of the beating was an 89-year-old driver with the initials HM. Ahsanul said that HM had previously grazed a motorbike before being shouted at by thieves and judged by the masses.
