Life shaped by work – Mahlberg

Late resettler Irma Schumacher celebrates her 90th birthday.

Irma Schumacher celebrates her 90th birthday at Sonnenweg 29 in Mahlberg with her family. The celebrant came to Germany with her husband Josef, who has since died, in 1993 as a late resettler from Siberia.

Until a year ago, Irma Schumacher lived in Freiburg with her daughter Anna, who looked after and cared for her. Now daughter Elisabeth has taken over this task in Mahlberg. There is a small party for the birthday. Well-wishers include daughters, four grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Irma Schumacher, née Boger, was born as a German on January 24, 1932 in the village of Olgenfeld, Rostofgebiet in Russia. In 1941 the family was expelled and deported to Siberia because the national minority were considered allies of the enemy.

Of her siblings, one sister survived, with whom Irma grew up with her grandmother. The father had been drafted as a soldier, the mother in the trudarmee, a working army with a focus on camp characteristics. The girl was asked to work early on. She helped give birth to lambs in a flock of sheep. In 1955 she married Josef Schumacher from a neighboring town. They had three daughters. The oldest died at the age of eight. Irma Schumacher had previously worked in a brick factory.

After a busy life in Siberia, Irma and Josef Schumacher were able to emigrate to Germany and first ended up in a transit camp in the federal state of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. Acquaintances soon brought them to Freiburg im Breisgau, where they ended up living in a one-room apartment in Freiburg-Merzhausen.

They later got a new home in Freiburg-Zhringen. The husband died six years ago. Now the celebrant has found a new home in Mahlberg and is lovingly cared for by her daughter Elisabeth and her husband Sergej. In summer she can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view from the large balcony.
