Christina Applegate Opens up About Her Battle with Multiple Sclerosis

Christina Applegate, the beloved actress known for her role in “Married… With Children,” recently revealed her ongoing struggle with multiple sclerosis (MS). In an exclusive interview with People, Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler, another actress who also has MS, candidly discussed the highs and lows of living with the disease.

Uncovering the Symptom and Diagnosis

Applegate disclosed that she was first diagnosed with MS in 2021, but she had noticed symptoms seven years prior. The 52-year-old actress, who has hinted at retiring due to health concerns, spoke openly about her weight fluctuations resulting from the illness. With the progression of MS, Applegate initially gained 45 pounds, but has since lost 30 pounds.

Painful Symptoms and Medical Challenges

Describing her medical journey, Applegate shared that she suffered from intense pain and vomiting, leading to several hospitalizations. Medical professionals initially struggled to identify the cause of her symptoms. The actress added that her stomach and intestines do not function properly, causing discomfort.

Emmys Appearance and MS

Applegate made headlines with a surprise appearance at the Emmys in January, where she humorously remarked about her appearance not being a result of the diabetes drug, Ozempic. Reflecting on the moment, she admitted feeling overwhelmed and not remembering much of it. The standing ovation she received warmed her heart.

Shared Bond and Support

Applegate formed a connection with Jamie-Lynn Sigler in 2021 through a mutual friend. Sigler, known for her role in “The Sopranos,” has been battling MS for over two decades. The two women are now joining forces to release a new podcast called “MeSsy,” which offers insight into their experiences and provides support to the MS community.

Finding Humor and Optimism Despite the Challenges

Applegate and Sigler acknowledge the difficulties presented by MS but also highlight the benefits they have discovered. Applegate playfully shared how convenient it is to find parking with a handicap placard. The two women humorously criticized the design of adult diapers, which have become a necessity in their daily lives.

Although their journey with MS is challenging, Applegate and Sigler maintain a resilient spirit and refuse to let the disease define them. They stand together, supporting one another, and spreading awareness to inspire others facing similar battles.
