Chinese City Apologizes as Reporter Blocked from Covering Fatal Explosion
Officials in a city near Beijing expressed apologies after a journalist from a prominent state media outlet was denied access to cover a tragic explosion, shedding light on the challenges faced by journalists in reporting within the world’s second-largest economy.
Blocking State Broadcaster’s Journalist
A clip from China Central Television, the state broadcaster, captured the incident where a reporter was denied access to the site of a fatal explosion resulting from a suspected gas leak. The blast, which occurred in Yanjiao, located just east of the national capital, claimed the lives of at least seven individuals on Wednesday.
During her reporting near the scene of the explosion, the journalist from China Central Television encountered interference from local security officials, who abruptly obstructed her camera and claimed that the situation was “too dangerous.”
