The alligator “Saturn”, who survived the Second World War and about whom a legend says that belonged to the collection of Adolfo Hitler, died at the age of 84 in the Moscow zoo, the institution reported.

The alligator was born in Mississippi (EU) in 1936 and he was taken almost immediately to the Berlin zoo, from where he escaped after the British RAF bombings on November 23, 1943, the Moscow zoo said on his official Instagram account.

“How the alligator survived the next three years is a mystery. It is only known that British soldiers found him in 1946 and they handed it over to the USSR, “said the institution.

In July 1946 he arrived in Moscow. “Almost immediately the myth was born that the alligator had allegedly been part of Hitler’s collection and not the Berlin zoo,” he added.

The Russian press notes that in 1968 an attempt was made to cross “Saturn” with a female named “Shipka” from the Chicago Zoo.

“Shipka” was 30 years younger than “Saturn”, but he turned out to be sterile and then suddenly died.

The alligator “was so upset that he refused to eat for a long time,” says the Meduza news portal,

“Saturn” lived for 74 years in the Moscow zoo. Having lived 84 years “is a respectable age” for this type of reptile, an “Alligator mississippiensis”, given that in the wild these alligators usually live only between 30 and 50 years, explained the Moscow institution.
