Shenzhen Landfill Relocation: Tech Hub Gains Millions of Square Meters

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor December 7, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Shenzhen Excavates Landfill to Fuel Tech Expansion

SHENZHEN, CHINA – In ⁤a dramatic move to address ‍critical land scarcity, the Chinese tech hub of shenzhen is undertaking a $307 million (2.17 billion yuan) project to relocate a massive landfill from the city center. The effort, which‍ involves detoxifying and removing 2.55 million cubic meters (90.05 million cubic feet) of waste, will free up 30 ‌hectares (74 ‍acres)⁣ of land ⁢for‍ development – enough space ‍to create over 1 million square meters (10.76 million sq ft) ‍of new floor space.

Shenzhen, a city synonymous with China’s rapid economic transformation, faces unique spatial challenges. Despite boasting⁣ the third-highest gross domestic‍ product among mainland Chinese cities at 3.68 trillion yuan ($520.6 billion) in 2022 and a population of 18 million, its area⁣ of approximately 2,000 sq km (772 square miles) is substantially smaller than those of Shanghai‍ and Beijing. This land constraint is now driving ‌innovative solutions, including the ambitious landfill relocation.

The landfill, operational between 1983 and 1997, ‌was⁢ initially situated on the periphery of a developing city. However, Shenzhen’s explosive growth has enveloped the site, transforming it into an undesirable eyesore and potential environmental hazard. The reclaimed land is slated to house facilities supporting key industries,‍ including artificial intelligence servers, biotech labs, and studios for modern manufacturing and art & design. ‍

Home to tech giants like Tencent, Huawei Technologies, BYD, and DJI, Shenzhen’s development is increasingly hampered ⁢by its ‌limited geographical ‌footprint, making projects like this crucial for continued ‍economic expansion.

Title: Chinese Jets Lock Radar on Japanese Aircraft Over Okinawa

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor December 7, 2025

High tension: Chinese Fighter Jets Lock Radar on⁢ Japanese Planes

TOKYO - Chinese⁢ J-15 fighter jets locked radar onto Japanese aircraft in two separate incidents on Saturday, marking the most serious clash between the two countries’ militaries in recent years ⁢and escalating regional⁤ tensions. The encounters occurred near islands close to territory claimed by both Japan and China, according to the japanese Defense Ministry.

The⁣ incidents come amid heightened anxieties over China’s growing military assertiveness, especially concerning Taiwan, which Beijing views as a renegade province. Japan’s recent warning that it could respond to Chinese military action against Taiwan‍ if it threatened Japanese security has further strained‍ relations. This latest escalation‍ is likely to ‌exacerbate those tensions and raise concerns about potential miscalculation in the region.

The‌ Japanese Defense Ministry stated the J-15 jets were launched from China’s Liaoning aircraft carrier, which was maneuvering south of the Okinawa Islands alongside‍ three missile destroyers. In both instances, the Chinese jets used their radar ‍to “lock on” to the Japanese planes, a move considered aggressive as it prepares the aircraft⁤ for ⁢potential engagement. ‍

This is not the first time tensions have flared between ‌the two nations’ militaries. In 2013, Japan reported a Chinese warship locked its radar on a Japanese ‌destroyer in the East China Sea. Similarly,in 2016,Beijing accused Japanese jets of aiming fire control radar at Chinese warplanes. More recently, in June, Chinese fighter jets reportedly flew‌ very close to Japanese patrol planes near Okinawa.⁢

As of last Thursday, China had deployed over 100 naval and coast guard ships in East Asian⁣ waters, prompting concern from Taiwan, which described the increased military presence as ⁢a threat⁢ to the Indo-Pacific region. Japan has stated it‌ is closely monitoring⁣ China’s activities.

The U.S. State Department‌ has yet ‌to comment on ‌the latest incidents. Japan hosts the largest concentration of U.S.military forces overseas, including warships, aircraft, and thousands of U.S. Marines based in Okinawa.

Why China Could Win the Rare Earths Race

by Priya Shah – Business Editor December 6, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

Washington Faces Uphill Battle to ‍Challenge China‘s Dominance in rare earths Supply Chains

On the same day, the Trump administration sealed agreements with ⁤malaysia and Thailand focused on bolstering America’s access to critical minerals and rare earths -⁤ resources vital for technologies ranging from electric vehicles to defense systems. However, analysts suggest the U.S.may be⁢ at a disadvantage in securing these supplies⁤ compared to China, which has‌ cultivated long-standing economic ties with⁢ resource-rich nations.

The back-to-back ‍deals‌ reflect a growing competition between⁣ the U.S. and⁢ China for control over rare earths ⁤and critical minerals. while the U.S. aims ⁤to diversify its supply chains, experts believe Beijing is better⁤ positioned to succeed due ⁢to its established relationships and investment strategies in Southeast Asia, Africa, and beyond.

According ‍to analysts, countries in the Global South frequently enough view China as a “partner that actually builds,” with ⁤investments typically offered without preconditions.⁢ In contrast,U.S. investments are often accompanied by more stipulations. This perception, coupled with a view of the ⁤Trump administration as‍ “aggressive,” could hinder the U.S. ⁤effort to break China’s existing dominance in the rare earths market.

The White House stated that agreements with ⁤both Malaysia ⁤and Thailand would “strengthen cooperation on critical minerals supply chains development and expansion,” and promote trade in areas including resource exploration, extraction, processing, ⁢and refining. The U.S. and Malaysia also agreed to step up cooperation on building and expanding critical minerals⁣ supply chains and‍ to strengthen the security⁣ of supplies in both countries.

Beijing Real Estate Tycoon Zhang ⁤Xin Credits⁢ Education for Rise from Factory⁢ Worker to Billionaire

zhang Xin, dubbed “the woman who built Beijing,”‍ has amassed a $3.3 billion fortune (approximately Rp. 54 trillion) through her real estate company, Hongshi, defying⁣ expectations in China’s traditionally male-dominated construction industry. Her journey, from a factory worker under Mao Zedong’s regime to one of the world’s wealthiest women, underscores ⁤the transformative power of ‌education and challenges conventional gender roles in the workplace. As ⁢China’s property market evolves and women continue to ⁢break barriers in global business, Zhang Xin‘s story offers a compelling example of perseverance and the potential for economic empowerment.

Zhang Xin’s path began far from the‍ skyscrapers she would later shape. Early in her ⁤life,‍ she was assigned to work in a factory ⁢under the directives of Mao Zedong. This experience, however, instilled in ⁤her a belief in gender equality,as‍ she witnessed men and‍ women working side-by-side. “Women hold up half the sky. Men⁤ and women all work. ‍So, the idea that men go ⁣to work, women stay at home and that‍ kind of division of labour didn’t ⁤exist in China when I was little,” Zhang later recalled. A pivotal moment arrived when she chose to pursue education abroad, traveling to England to continue her studies.

Years later, reflecting on her life’s trajectory, Zhang Xin identified education as the key catalyst for her success. “If I looked ‌back at my life and asked myself what was the most important transformational element, I ‌would⁢ say education. ‌everything changed when I decided ⁣to go to England and become a ⁣student,” she stated in a 2013 speech to her alma mater, as quoted by The Times.

Inspired ⁣by a female speaker⁢ she encountered‌ during her studies-a woman she admired for her eloquence⁣ and courage in a male-dominated surroundings-Zhang ‍Xin found a role‌ model.”I remember being in awe of her and thinking: ‘How can she speak so well? How can she possibly argue with hundreds of men in this room? She’s so brave and⁣ so great. And I took her…as a⁣ role model,” she said.

In 1995,Zhang Xin and her husband,Pan ‌Shiyi,co-founded Hongshi, which became known as‍ China’s SOHO in 2002. Today, their combined net worth stands at $3.3 billion, a testament ‌to their‌ entrepreneurial vision and Zhang Xin’s unwavering determination ⁤to succeed in a field where ‍women were historically ⁣underrepresented.

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor December 3, 2025

Deep-Sea Search for Missing Malaysia Airlines Flight⁣ 370‍ to Resume

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – A renewed deep-sea search for Malaysia Airlines ⁣Flight 370 will begin December 30, offering a potential, though uncertain, path toward closure for families who have waited nearly a decade for⁤ answers. The search will be conducted by U.S.-based ‌marine robotics firm Ocean Infinity and focus⁤ on a 15,000-square-kilometer (5,800-square-mile)⁢ area of the Indian Ocean.

The ⁣Boeing‌ 777 disappeared in‌ 2014 while flying from ‌Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 people on⁤ board, becoming one of aviation’s greatest ⁤mysteries.Despite extensive, and ultimately ⁤unsuccessful, multinational searches, the main wreckage has never been found. This latest effort represents⁤ a ‍renewed commitment ‍by the Malaysian government to locate the aircraft and provide answers to grieving families, and is being undertaken⁣ on a “no-find, no-fee” basis.

The transport ministry‍ announced⁤ that Ocean Infinity will search intermittently for a total of 55 days, concentrating on areas identified‌ as having the ‍highest probability of containing wreckage. Malaysia’s government gave the green ⁤light for the contract with Ocean Infinity in March, agreeing to pay $70 million only if the search yields results. The initial search was⁣ paused in April due to adverse weather ‍conditions.

While an earlier, expensive multinational search failed to locate the aircraft, debris confirmed to be from the flight has washed ashore on the‍ east African coast and Indian Ocean islands. Ocean Infinity previously conducted a private search in 2018, also without success.

Chinese Foreign Ministry‍ spokesperson Lin Jian stated Beijing appreciates the efforts ‌being made by the Malaysian side. the resumption of the search underscores the ongoing international interest‍ in resolving the mystery of⁤ MH370 and ⁣bringing a measure of peace to those affected by the tragedy.

The initiative, announced Saturday by⁤ the Work Safety Committee of the State Council, China’s ⁢cabinet, ‌aims to address⁢ fire hazards in ⁢all high-rise buildings, including residential towers, offices,⁤ hospitals, and⁤ shopping complexes, according to state media reports.

The campaign will focus on “identifying and rectifying” fire risks, with particular attention paid to buildings ‍undergoing renovations or refurbishments.
