The sovereignty of Taiwan is a particularly sensitive issue for China. Talking about it therefore has as its main objective only that of provoking the Chinese leaders. A tweet Friday of the American mission to the UN providing “clear support for the Taiwan region to participate in the UN” therefore logically provoked the anger of Beijing.

For Beijing “there is only one China in the world”

Chinese authorities say “serious violation” of “Chinese sovereignty and territorial integrity” and this tweet “seriously interferes in China’s internal affairs,” said the Chinese diplomatic mission. to the United Nations. “There is only one China in the world. The government of the People’s Republic of China is the only legal government representing all of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China, “the diplomatic mission said.

The American tweet noted that the UN was founded 75 years ago to allow “all voices to speak.” “Banning Taiwan from the United Nations is an affront not only to the proud Taiwanese people but also to the principles of the United Nations,” he added. In the process, the American mission had retweeted a series of messages stressing that Taiwan’s response to the pandemic had been a model for the world and that the island deserved its place in the World Health Organization. The island was excluded from the WHO, in which it enjoyed observer status until 2016, the year in which Tsai Ing-wen came to power, who refused to recognize the principle of unity of Taiwan and mainland China within the same country.

Growing tensions

The message of the American mission seems to have been written for the sole purpose of provoking China. It indeed falls at a time when tensions are growing between Washington and Beijing. United States China regularly accuses China of being behind the spread of the coronavirus and of concealing information about the reality of the danger to the rest of the world.
