Chalk texts, Instagram and an association: How the women from “Catscalls of Halle” fight against harassment

Six women in Halle are committed to almost everyday sexual harassment – the so-called catcalls. MDR SACHSEN-ANHALT met two of them. Via Instagram, the activists of “Catcalls of Halle” mostly tell women what happened to them – mostly on the street: whistling after, silly sayings, but also unwanted and unpleasant touches.

In front of discos like the Schorre in particular, statements such as: “Great ass” or “If you dress like that, you shouldn’t be surprised if you are raped,” reports one of the activists. And adds:

Something like that shouldn’t be allowed. Everyone can dress how they want and how they feel comfortable. And nobody has the right to address them that way about it.

But the attacks do not only happen at night or in the vicinity of clubs for a long time. “Those affected experience most catcalls in broad daylight, somewhere in the city. And more often in summer than in winter, because many women wear shorter clothes. But basically something like this happens every day,” says a representative of the group.
