Born during the Covid-19 Pandemic, Babies are Vulnerable to Neurodevelopmental Disorders

Suara.com – Pandemic Covid-19 really have an impact not only on the health condition of adults, but also baby newborn.

Babies born to mothers exposed to Covid-19 infection are at risk of developing neurodevelopmental delays, according to a recent study published in JAMA Pediatrics.

Columbia University’s Irving Medical Center conducted a prospective cohort study called the COVID-19 Infant Outcome Initiative (COMBO) in the spring of 2020 to study the relationship between exposure to the coronavirus while a baby is still in the womb and their health.

The researchers studied a cohort of infants in the womb exposed to Covid-19 with a group of infants not exposed to the virus.

As a result, babies born to mothers infected with the corona virus during pregnancy are at a higher risk of experiencing delayed neurodevelopment.

“We think we found some changes in the neurodevelopment of infants whose mothers had Covid-19 during pregnancy,” said lead researcher Dr. Dani Dumitriu, quoted from Fox News.

The assistant professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at Columbia University added that the condition of the corona virus infection in the mother also causes skills motor and children’s social decline.

Researchers studied 255 babies born during pandemic by 2020. As many as 45 percent of babies born to mothers who tested positive for Covid-19 during pregnancy, compared to their development scores with children born before the pandemic (not exposed to the virus).

The study found babies born during the 2020 pandemic, whether or not their child was exposed to the coronavirus during pregnancy or not, had lower gross motor, fine motor, and problem-solving skills scores than those born before the pandemic.

This research has several limitations, among others, it was conducted in one location in New York City when the Covid-19 outbreak became the epicenter at that time. So it is difficult to generalize, only study developmental patterns up to 6 months and assessment of infant neurodevelopment is subjective, not objective, as they are reported by parents.
