The Mayor’s Office of Bogotá closed the agreement with the Chinese pharmaceutical company to transform the institution into a mixed economy society, thus advancing towards the health sovereignty of the South American country thanks to the production of vaccines against Covid-19, Hepatitis A, Chickenpox and Poliomyelitis.

Mayor Claudia López highlighted the economic and health importance of the agreement: “Today is a really happy day for the city. ‘BogotáBio’ is for science and pharmaceutical development in Bogotá and Colombia what the Metro is for mobility. That level of importance is what we are achieving today,” she stated.

For his part, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Álvaro Leyva Durán, highlighted that “This is an act with a vision of the future, because ‘BogotáBio’ will produce vaccines for the country. I hope the new administrations know how to interpret this effort that the mayor of Bogotá leaves in her legacy,” he expressed.

For the Chinese ambassador, Zhu Jingyang, “This project will offer very relevant help to the development of the cause of public health in Bogotá, and will also serve to create new jobs and local talents in the development of biotechnology. ‘BogotáBio’ is the result of long efforts of scientific, technological, economic and commercial cooperation.”

‘BogotáBio’ concentrates technological transfer and technical assistance from Sinovac in a project that will receive contributions from the District for 450,000 million dollars for infrastructure and equipment, while the pharmaceutical company from the Asian giant will invest 374,000 million dollars between 2024 and 2033.

The Chinese company was selected among 15 biopharmaceutical companies in the world for its results and quality. In the words of Mayor López, “This is a project of at least 10 years and for the country, it is not just for the city. “We are contributing so that Colombia can regain health sovereignty and the production of pharmaceuticals,” she added.
