There is an imminent danger of war with Russia, warns Belgium’s defense chief, Admiral Michel Hoffmann, quoted by local media. There is something to worry about, he adds.
According to him, Europe urgently needs to prepare and clearly show that it is capable of defending itself. Before Russia invaded Ukraine, a Russian attack on Europe seemed unthinkable, the admiral says. He notes that Russian President Vladimir Putin is increasingly making threats and Russia is constantly rearming and adapting production to wartime needs. The Russians have already shown their readiness to attack their neighbor, adds Hoffman.
According to him, it can be expected that Moscow will open a second front in the coming years by continuing the war in Ukraine. We must do what is necessary to have the capabilities to prevent such developments and show the determination to strike back if necessary, he insists. Europe urgently needs to prepare. Those seeking peace must be prepared for war to dissuade Russia, Hoffman added.
He expresses pessimism about the war in Ukraine. The admiral insists that NATO countries contribute to the possibilities of dissuading the Russian side from launching an attack against a country of the pact.
