Bank payments with Blitz? Important changes from March 20, 2024 in PKO BP

People paying with smartphones may feel concerned. Or at least PKO BP customers. The bank announced that from March 20, HCE contactless payments will be gradually disabled. Specifically, we are talking about payments using smartphones equipped with the Android system with a card connected in the IKO application. What should be the alternative? PKO BP clearly encourages users to choose contactless Blik or, alternatively, to use Google Pay. Why this change?

The solution of own payments by phone was developed by banks even before other payment methods became popular (or even before such options even appeared). Currently, however, HCE is becoming an unnecessary solution when there are others on the market, such as Blik. PKO BP joins Polish banks abandoning HCE in favor of other, modern technologies.

In practice, PKO BP customers will have to get used to a rather technical change. This HCE payment method is simply being phased out. However, this does not mean there is no option to pay by phone. Other options are widely used, popular and considered safe – and that is what is crucial for customers – security payments are not to be affected!

PKO Bank Polski mainly recommends changing the payment style to using Blik. This option does not require a card, making it the most convenient swap. Importantly, Blik is widely accepted in POS terminals in Poland, as well as around the world – there we can use Blik in Mastercard contactless terminals. These payments are free of charge, and when making payments outside the country, they are converted into PLN without any currency conversion fees – the Mastercard exchange rate on the date of payment is used.

Banks do not live on Blik alone. And this is absolutely true. Customers using PKO BP services can switch not only to Blik payments. The available solutions include the use of:

  • Google Pay,

  • Xiaomi Pay,

  • Garmin Pay,

  • Swatch PAY!

This is how many people have HCE payments activated in PKO Bank Polski on their phones. The HCE deactivation will be gradual, so it can be assumed that messages will appear so that users can adapt to the change.
