(CNN) — A “big explosion” has occurred in a residential area in Baltimore, Maryland, trapping several people, including children, a local firefighters union said on Twitter.
Baltimore IAFF Local 734 firefighters confirmed the information to CNN over the phone without providing additional details, as first responders, including members of Local 734, are on their way to the scene.
James E. Bentley, the spokesman for the mayor of Baltimore City, tells CNN that he is aware of the reports and is heading to a meeting on the situation.
Three people have been rescued by firefighters, the group said, and the Baltimore Special Operations Rescue Team continues operations.
Baltimore City medical units and Baltimore County Fire Department units were also called to the scene.
