KNMI: Number of warm nights tripled since last century | NOW

The number of ‘warm nights’, in which it does not get colder than 18 degrees, has roughly tripled in the Netherlands since the second half of the last century. This is evident from Friday calculations by the KNMI.

The institute compared the number of warm nights at five weather stations in the period 1951-2000 with those in 2001-2019. The warm nights were measured at five KNMI weather stations: in De Kooy, De Bilt, Eelde, Vlissingen and Maastricht.

This showed that a nighttime minimum temperature of 18 degrees or more is almost three times more common this century than in the period 1951-2000. In Vlissingen in the period 1951-2000 it was an average of 18 degrees or more at night four times a year. This century, a so-called ‘warm night’ in Vlissingen occurred an average of thirteen times a year.

Vlissingen is therefore also the location where the number of warm nights occurs most often this century. The smallest number of warm nights was counted in Eelde. “In general, the number of warm nights increases as the location is further south and closer to the sea. You can see the damping effect of the sea on temperature fluctuations here,” says the KNMI.

The number of tropical nights, in which it does not get colder than 20 degrees, has also increased. For example, such a warm night occurred three times in Vlissingen this century, while it happened once in the second half of the last century.
