Bad Impact in Asia, Scientists Reject Solar Radiation Modification Plan

JAKARTA – Plans to cool the earth through engineering Sun received rejection from dozens of scientists in the world. Because this plan is bad for rainforests in Asia and changes the climate in Africa.

Quoted from Science Alert, Wednesday (19/1/2022), the failure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions led some policymakers to embrace solar geoengineering.

This is an engineering move to cool the earth by blocking out the sun’s rays. You do this by injecting billions of sulfur particles into the middle atmosphere.

In an open letter, scientists assess the plan, called solar radiation modification (SRM), the consequences could outweigh the benefits.

“Deployment geoengineering surya cannot be governed globally in a fair, inclusive and effective manner,” said the letter, supported by comments in the journal WIREs Climate Change.

“We therefore call for urgent political action from governments, the United Nations and other actors to prevent the normalization of solar geoengineering as a climate policy option,” the letter continued.

The world’s nations have committed to limiting the rise in Earth’s surface temperature to 1.5C above mid-19th century levels, but UN-backed scientists say that threshold will be tolerated within a decade.
