Around seven hours after the opening of Axenstrasse in the canton of Uri, a rock fall fell again in the Gumpisch area on Tuesday evening. The connection between Flüelen and Sisikon was blocked again.

The recent landslide occurred shortly before 8:30 p.m., as the Uri Cantonal Police announced in the late evening. Monitoring instruments therefore detected terrain movements, which subsequently led to stones hitting the protective nets above Axenstrasse. Nobody got hurt. According to the police, the street and bridge were also not damaged.

Released at 2 p.m.
The evening before, there was a rock fall at 9.45 p.m. due to rainfall in the area. The Axenstrasse remained closed until 2 p.m. on Tuesday between the Flüelen roundabout and the Wolfsprung junction. Neither people nor the road infrastructure were damaged.
–
A monitoring and alarm system was installed in the Gumpisch area at risk of falling rocks. If this movement registers on the mountain, the road will be blocked without delay. A deflection dam and nets created in winter also protect the infrastructure.

Construction project blocked due to objections
At the beginning of May this year, several hundred cubic meters of material had descended on Axenstrasse. The warning infrastructure was also damaged. Axenstrasse is part of the A4 and connects Brunnen with Flüelen on the right bank of Lake Lucerne. It leads through the Gumpisch rockfall area between Flüelen and Sisikon.

Security is also to be increased as part of the “Neue Axenstrasse” construction project. The entire project is currently blocked due to objections. (SDA)
