the number of cases for domestic violence explodes

In 2021, the Dijon public prosecutor’s office handled 1,000 cases of domestic violence, i.e. double the number of cases handled in 2018. Of these thousand cases, 1/3 were dismissed, 1/3 gave rise to alternatives to prosecutions and 1/3 led to criminal proceedings. “In these cases of domestic violence, a hundred people were referred, indicates Olivier Caracotch, “a substantial number”, according to the public prosecutor of Dijon. “It is above all domestic violence that does not give rise to a temporary interruption of work that explodes,” adds Olivier Caracotch.

Record of immediate appearances in 2021

As a result, the year 2021 was also marked by a 20% increase in immediate appearances, i.e. 188: “the idea is to provide an immediate judicial response, particularly in cases of narcotics and domestic violence”, affirms the public prosecutor of Dijon. Out of the thousand files processed, around one hundred people were referred. The objective for Olivier Caracotch is also to reduce judgment times. They are today on the jurisdiction of Dijon of the order of 6 to 11 months.

To better handle cases of domestic violence, the Dijon court has recruited a project manager. The latter must make the link between the different jurisdictions. “She will work in particular with the juvenile judge and the sentence enforcement judge,” indicates the public prosecutor. Finally, the Dijon prosecution can count on the arrival of a new deputy prosecutor, Bruno Amouret, who is seconded to the fight against violence against women.
