Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes: details of the reform of health studies

The academic rector Olivier Dugrip and several directors of the University of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes detailed the new health study reform that is being put in place at the start of the next school year.

The reform of health studies is settling in our region at the start of the 2021 school year and it’s a complex change! She marks the end of PACES and therefore the numerus clausus and the competition entirely by QCM.

Exit the PACES, three new ways to integrate the medicine sector

Now there will be three different ways to enter what is now called the MMOPK sector, Medicine, Maieutics, Odontology, Pharmacy, Physiotherapy.

– The first which literally replaces the PACES, it is the PASS (Specific Health Access Path), with a major field of study, health, and a minor field of study, more generalist according to the wishes of the student. Accession will be made by eligibility, that is to say, it will be composed of examinations in continuous control then by admission, with written and / or oral tests. Around 60% of places in the MMOPK sector will be allocated for the PASS.

– The second way, the L.AS (License with option “Health Access”), comes in addition. This is the reverse of PASS, a major generalist field of study, chosen by the student, and a minor field, health access. Access will also be by eligibility and then by admission. Around 40% of places in the MMOPK sector will be allocated for the L.AS.

– Finally the last route, much more minority, will be via the paramedical training. It concerns people who have already graduated (holders for example of a master’s degree, a doctorate, a diploma of medical assistant or engineer) who wish to reorient themselves again.

The calculation of the number of admitted primants will be defined by two requirements. It will be first of all up to the success rate observed over the previous three years. It should allow meet both the needs in terms of medical personnel in the territory, but also to ensure equity of treatment between students. That’s what we call a number of open; : it is the university, in conjunction with the Regional Health Agency, which will determine the number of students admitted to each branch.

What is changing in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

The objective in the region is to diversify access routes as much as possible in the medical sector with various training courses within universities, in order to meet the medical needs of the territory.

Thus, in the universities of Lyon, we will find for example the SVT or the STAPS (Lyon 1), psychology (Lyon 2) or the law (Lyon 3)
In Saint-Étienne, many courses will be offered such as law, economics or management.
In Clermont-Ferrand, nine minors will integrate the PASS, including a specialty “History, Philosophy, Letters”.
In Grenoble, law, STAPS and science will be among the other specialties.

Another important point according to the Rector Delegate for Higher Education, Gabriele Fioni: “a young person who lives in Savoie for example, if he wants to access health studies, he can, through the L.AS system, do your first year studies in Chambéry or Annecy. Before, to study in Health, the student had to go to the big university towns, now, the first year can be done in his locality.

In all, with repetitions and new entrants, at the start of the school year, the Region will have 2,481 places for the MMOPK sector, which is 31% more than during the PACES.

No more repeating in the first year, but a second chance

This reform also marks the end of repetition in the first year. On the other hand, it is now possible, in the event of failure in PASS, to integrate the second year in L.AS, in the option chosen in the first year. Each student will therefore have two chances to join an MMOPK course: either one in PASS then an L.AS, or twice from L.AS.

Conversely, “If you do not manage to study Health and you want to become a lawyer for example, you can continue without losing a year on this path. It is a path which will always give the student the possibility of doing what he wishes., and that’s something important “, explains Gabriele Fioni.
