Austria’s National Council Head, Wolfgang Sobotka, Under Investigation for Corruption and Abuse of Power

“The National Council gave the go-ahead for the Economic and Corruption Prosecutor’s Office to conduct an investigation into the head of the National Council, Wolfgang Sobotka,” the statement said.

It is noted that, on the recommendation of the Immunity Committee, the deputies unanimously decided that “there is no connection between these charges and Sobotka’s political activities as a member of parliament and head of the National Council.”

In particular, we are talking about suspicion of participation or instigation of abuse of power in connection with a tax audit of the Erwin Prel Foundation.

At the same time, the opposition took advantage of the debate to invite Sobotka to resign. The unanimous opinion was that he was seriously damaging the position of head of the National Council.

Austria’s anti-corruption prosecutor’s office is investigating whether Sobotka interfered with the activities of former Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance Thomas Schmid during a tax audit of the Erwin Prell Foundation, created by Sobotka’s fellow party member – the former governor of Lower Austria.
