Charlotte Gilmour, a 23-year-old, had been battling a chest infection for several weeks when she woke up at her home in Palmerston North to discover a rash covering her body. Instantly recognizing the seriousness of her condition, Gilmour recalls bursting into tears upon seeing herself in the mirror. The fear and anxiety she felt were palpable as she knew she needed immediate help.

Upon seeking medical attention, Gilmour was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, an extremely rare disorder that affects less than one-in-a-million individuals globally. Whether her chest infection was connected to the severe allergic reaction remains unclear.
Doctors at a Loss: Limited Knowledge of Treatment
Admitted to the hospital, Gilmour encountered Filipino nurses who recognized her symptoms from cases in their home country. However, due to the lack of comprehensive information available, medical staff struggled to provide appropriate treatment. Gilmour shared her anxiety, stating, “It was scary, I guess, hearing… ‘OK, no one really knows a lot about this’.”
A Painful Battle: The Impact of the Allergic Reaction
To alleviate her extreme blistering, which extended to her digestive tract, Gilmour required a feeding tube. The initial round of steroids administered by doctors proved ineffective, leaving them uncertain about her prognosis. Medical staff determined that continuing the medication was of little value. Nevertheless, Gilmour pleaded to resume the treatment when her vision became compromised. Miraculously, the medication gradually brought about positive changes. After a grueling 30-day hospital stay, Gilmour began her path to recovery and was ultimately discharged.
Awareness and Caution: Side Effects and Precautions
It is vital to note that an allergic reaction, resulting in rashes or blistering of the skin, is a known side effect of lamotrigine. This medication, used to alleviate depression and epilepsy, has been associated with skin irritations in some patients. Although most cases of skin irritation subside, immediate discontinuation of the medication and seeking medical advice is strongly recommended if such symptoms manifest.
