The annual ranking produced by Airports Council International once again recognizes Atlanta, Beijing and Dubai. Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport thus retains the top spot, with a total of 104 million passengers in 2017, down slightly from the previous year. This decline is in part due to heavy snowfall that led to the cancellation of many flights and the paralysis of air traffic on the east coast of the United States last December. Located in the State of Georgia, the airport platform remains nonetheless essential since it is home to one of the largest airlines in the world, Delta, explained the BBC in an article dating from 2013. In addition, it provides the vast majority domestic flights.

In the rest of the ranking, Beijing Airport comes in second place – with 96 million people – followed by Dubai International Airport (United Arab Emirates) – with 88 million travelers.

In seventh place on the podium, London Heathrow Airport is positioned as the leading European airport. Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport is only tenth place, with 69.5 million passengers, up 5.4% compared to 2016. According to the Airport Council International, passenger traffic at the 20 most frequented thus increased by 5.2% in 2017, totaling 1.5 billion travelers.

For goods traffic, Hong Kong International Airport takes first place with more than five million metric tonnes of goods, followed by Memphis (United States), Shanghai and the airport. Pudong International (South Korea). “The rise in cargo volumes and passenger numbers at many airports around the world is a testament to increased business and consumer confidence, at least in the short term,” commented Angela Gittens, CEO of ACI World, in a statement.
