Angela Merkel wants severe restrictions for unvaccinated people

The corona situation in Germany is coming to a head: Chancellor Merkel expressed concern at the CDU board meeting – and spoke out in favor of massive restrictions for unvaccinated people.

Chancellor Angela Merkel has apparently demanded in the federal executive board of the CDU that there should be severe restrictions for those who have not been vaccinated. T-online found out about this from party circles. In view of the significant increase in the number of infections, Merkel had expressed concern – and not ruled out that unvaccinated people would have to test themselves daily in the workplace and that the restrictions could go beyond the 2G model. Health Minister Jens Spahn joined this.

CDU boss Armin Laschet also said after the committee meetings of his party that there was a serious situation in Germany because of the increasing numbers. The situation in the intensive care units is worrying. The Bundestag wants to deal with the topic in special sessions on November 11th and 18th. The new North Rhine-Westphalian Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst, as chairman of the Prime Minister’s Conference, also wants to hold talks with the federal states. Booster vaccinations are now necessary for those over 60.

Corona infections are picking up speed

In the meantime, individual federal states are already acting: In view of the drastically increasing corona infections, Saxony’s government wants to tighten protective measures and introduce the 2G rule (vaccinated or recovered) for restaurants, indoor events or major events. These are the cornerstones of the new protection ordinance, which the cabinet discussed on Tuesday. The major events also include football games. FFP-2 masks should be mandatory in local public transport.

After a shortened hearing phase, the Saxon cabinet wants to make a final decision on Friday. The new regulation is due to come into force next Monday. It is about “prevention in the pandemic”, explained Dagmar Neukirch, State Secretary in the Ministry of Social Affairs in Saxony. Otherwise one would have to declare a state of emergency if the hospitals were overloaded.

The number of new corona infections in Germany has been picking up speed for days: On Tuesday, the number of known infections rose by 10,813 to 4.6 million, according to data on the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) website. The number of deaths increased by 81 to 95,833. The seven-day incidence is 153.7.
