Air Belgium temporarily confirms the end of scheduled service to Curaçao and Punta Cana

Until mid-January, there will be flights to both destinations once or twice a week. Subsequently, in the period around the spring holidays, numerous flights will be made, after which the plug will be disconnected on March 5.

An Air Belgium spokesperson cites high fuel prices and aviation taxes in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, as the reason for the suspension of flights. And Curaçao doesn’t attract enough travelers from Belgium to fly to that destination non-stop.

“Punta Cana is a price sensitive destination, cheap flights are in high demand. However, for airlines, Punta Cana is a very expensive destination. The price of fuel and the aviation tax are the most expensive in the Caribbean. That is why AB, like other airlines, has to reduce its flight schedule to these destinations, “the spokesperson said.

Previously, Air Belgium had already been forced to significantly reduce its flight schedule to Bonaire. Instead of all winter, there are only flights to this island during the Christmas holidays.

For Curaçao, the termination of Air Belgium scheduled service is a new shock absorber. KLM recently announced that it is cutting its flight schedule considerably by flying to the island only once a day during the winter, instead of twice on some days. The Curacao government has calculated that this will cost the island nearly 20 million euros in lost income.
