OTTAWA – Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned a series of vandalism and arson churches Catholic of Canada .

Canadian police say 10 churches were vandalized on Canada Day – July 1 – in Calgary, Alberta. Authorities believe the vandalism was the result of the discovery of unmarked graves in boarding schools as churches were damaged with red and orange paint. Orange is associated with a former boarding school.

In addition, several churches are numbered 215. That is the number of unmarked graves found at the former boarding school of Kamloops, British Columbia at the end of last May.

Four Catholic churches were burned in the last week and all were on First Nations land.

Trudeau said while it was understandable that people were horrified by the finding of 1,148 unmarked graves of First Nations children in three former residential schools, it was not a justification for the destructive action. Most but not all of the vandalism targeted Catholic churches, which control about 60% of Canada’s 139 boarding schools.
