ACCOUNTABILITY – Danilo: “Election failure cannot be left unexplained or half explained”

The president of the Republic Danilo Medina said that the Dominican people require and demand answers to the ruling presented in the automated voting system that suspended the municipal elections on February 16.

In his accountability speech, Medina said that an event of this “size cannot be left unexplained or half-explained.”

The president, who speaks in front of the National Assembly, said they will make available to the Organization of American States (OAS), the International Foundation for Electoral Systems (IFES), among other agencies, to carry out the investigation to the equipment used with automated voting.

“It is an unfortunate and embarrassing fact that tarnishes Dominican democracy,” Medina said at the beginning of the last speech at parliamentary headquarters before leaving power on August 16.

Medina acknowledged that the Dominican Republic is experiencing a “delicate” situation following the annulment of the elections.

The president said that the electoral annulment “has generated a justified indignation” in the population and assured that it is identified with the demands of the protesters who protest daily from the day of the elections, “in the sense that the truth is sought, the whole truth, without a clipper or restrictions. “

Before the start of the speech, the opposition parties withdrew from Congress in protest against the annulment of the municipal elections.

The spokesman for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) in the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco, told reporters that the decision has been taken to denounce “the constant violations of the Constitution and laws” by the Government.

Similarly, a mass demonstration is taking place in front of the headquarters of the Central Electoral Board (JCE), where protests have taken place since the day of the failed elections, which will be repeated on March 15.

He said that to reestablish the loss of trust, a starting point is required, and he promised that they will work so that the next elections of March 15 and May 17 will never happen again, such as those presented in the middle of February.
