The Russian ambassador will have to meet with officials of the EC and EU diplomatic service on Monday, said Peter Stano, the press secretary of the bloc’s foreign service, Joseph Borrell.

He added that Russia’s sanctions were clearly politically motivated and that the Russian representative from Brussels would be strongly condemned and protested.

As reported, Russia on Friday, sanctions were imposed on eight officials of EU institutions and member states, including EP President David Sasoli and EC Vice President Vera Jourova, denying them entry into Russia.

Sanctions have also been targeted at Jacques Mayor, a member of the French delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Jorg Raupah, Chief Prosecutor in Berlin, Ossa Scott, Head of the Chemical, Biological, Radiation and Nuclear Safety Laboratory at the Swedish Institute for Total Defense, and Ilmārs Tomuskas, Head of the Estonian Language Department.

Moscow has said it is a response to EU sanctions against Russia for human rights abuses, including the imprisonment of opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

In a joint statement on Friday 30 April, EC President Urzula von der Leiena, President of the European Council Charles Michel and Sasoli, condemned Russia’s sanctions as “unjustified” and threatened to respond with “appropriate retaliation”.
