Saarbrücken / Trier (dpa / lrs) – After finding a body in a burned-out car on the A1 near Hermeskeil, the police suspect a connection to an act of violence in Riegelsberg in Saarland. “We assume that we found the alleged perpetrator dead there,” said a spokesman for the Saar state police headquarters on Thursday in Saarbrücken. An autopsy should now clarify the identity of the dead, added a police spokesman in Trier.

On Wednesday afternoon, according to the police in Riegelsberg, there was a violent argument between married couples: The 39-year-old man is said to have seriously injured his 37-year-old wife with a hatchet. After the fact, the man fled by car: “We looked for him, but could not find him at first,” said the spokesman in Saarbrücken.

The car that caught fire not far from Hermeskeil (Trier-Saarburg district) was then the man’s vehicle. “The connection was clear then.” It is still unclear whether the fire started itself or whether it was due to a technical defect. A death investigation should clarify how the person came to death. The fire brigade discovered the dead in the car after the extinguishing work. The car had already been in full fire when it arrived.
