Scientists recently announced that the Moon will collide with a foreign object in early March. According to experts, it was supposed to be the second stage of the Falcon 9 rocket from SpaceX. Now, however, the remnants of a Chinese rocket from the lunar mission Chang’e 5-T1 have hit the Moon.
According to NASA, the stray rocket, which is to collide with the moon on March 4, was incorrectly identified as the second stage of the SpaceX Falcon rocket. These are the remnants of a Chinese rocket from the lunar mission, he informs CNN.
The object to hit the moon was first discovered by Bill Gray, an independent researcher focusing on orbital dynamics and astronomical software development. In 2015, he identified the rocket as the second stage of the Falcon 9 from SpaceX, which was used in the same year to launch the American Deep Space Climate Observatory, or DSCOVR.
“I and other researchers have identified the object as Falcon 9. The object was clear and moving in the right path,” Gray said earlier.
But now he has come to the conclusion that he was originally mistaken. Upon further investigation, he found that it was not a Falcon 9, but remnants of Chinese lunar mission Chang’e 5-T1, which launched in October 2014 on the Long March 3C rocket.
“An analysis conducted by the Center for the Study of Objects Near the Earth suggests that the object expected to hit the far side of the moon on March 4 is likely to be a Chinese Chang’e 5-T1 booster launched in 2014,” she said over the weekend. NASA.
The rocket stage is expected to hit the Moon on March 4. However, the impact will be on the far side of the moon and will not be visible from Earth. The rocket is likely to disintegrate on impact, creating a crater about 10 to 20 meters in diameter.
