a reform by Samia Suluhu Hassan aimed at expanding access to education

(Agence Ecofin) – Following in the footsteps of a World Bank project, Tanzania has just given its agreement for the creation of more than 50 colleges intended for the learning of young people who have dropped out of school, and particularly pregnant girls deprived of this right. Schools are expected to open in early 2022.

Education, health, foreign policy… Samia Suluhu Hassan intends to mark the break with his predecessor John Magufuli, who died last March. The President of Tanzania validated a reform of the education system, the objective of which is to widen access to school to all social strata.

The reform focuses on the creation of popular development colleges (FDC). These training structures should begin their activities in January 2022. In total, 54 colleges will be set up in the country to accommodate students who have dropped out of school and wish to resume their studies, including pregnant girls expelled from school; a policy to which the former president was opposed.

“We are providing an alternative path to education for all children who have missed their education for any reason, including girls who got pregnant while in school, through our colleges. popular development (FDC) “, Leonard Akwilapo, a senior official in the Tanzanian Ministry of Education, told Reuters.

This reform is part of a project launched last year by the World Bank financed to the tune of 500 million dollars. Its objective is to reduce wastage at school and improve the learning environment, especially for young girls.

According to figures from the World Bank, in Tanzania currently around 5,500 girls are forced to drop out of school each year due to pregnancy.
