A bereaved family must pay a penalty of $ 16,000

The family of a young man who died with his girlfriend in a motorcycle accident last summer lament that he had to pay a penalty of over $ 16,000 when the couple’s condo was sold.

“It’s really shocking to be given a penalty for losing a loved one this way. Even the notary remained frozen when he saw the size of the amount, ”drops Giuliano Bruzzese’s mother, Caroline Lemay.

On August 7, the 29-year-old was on a motorcycle with his lover, Cyrielle Beaudoin, 27. At around 10 p.m., they were hit head-on by an oncoming vehicle on rue Nobel, near chemin Du Tremblay, in Boucherville.

According to the information the family received, the motorist found himself in the other lane for some still unknown reason, leaving no chance for the lovebirds, who had been together for eight years.

“It’s still very difficult for all of us to mourn, since we don’t really know what happened that evening,” says one of Giuliano’s sisters, Amélie Bruzzese.

Bank reimbursed

As liquidator of the estate, Mme Lemay took steps to sell the couple’s recently purchased condo located on the Island of Montreal.

Since the mortgage had not been paid off, she expected to pay a “small penalty”, but was shocked when she was told the amount was $ 16,580.

“It doesn’t make sense. We agree that if nothing had happened, my son would have continued to pay his mortgage. This is not a voluntary breach of contract. Under the circumstances, we would have expected a little understanding, but no, ”laments Mr.me Lemay.

She specifies that the sale of the condo made it possible to fully reimburse the bank.

“It’s not like they end up with a shortfall in the end,” she said.

“We invite those in charge of the succession to contact us to discuss possible easing measures in the circumstances”, for its part reacted the National Bank.

Distraction ?

The Bruzzese family hope that the police investigation will find a conclusion quickly, in order to know if there is a criminal element in this matter.

“If the other driver has anything to be ashamed of, we want to know. It is difficult to understand how someone can deviate from their path without distraction. Was he texting while driving? At the beginning, we were told that it was due to inexperience, since he is a young driver, ”says Amélie Bruzzese.

On the side of the Longueuil agglomeration police department, it is confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing.
