Bolivia opens the possibility of a dialogue with Mexico to solve the crisis generated by asylum to officials of former president Evo Morales at the Mexican embassy, Bolivian Foreign Minister Karen Longaric said Thursday.
There are many instances that have offered to approach a cordial conversation and solve these ‘impasses’, but dates have not yet been determined, ”Longaric said of an eventual meeting with his Mexican colleague Marcelo Ebrard.
The chancellor said that when there are such bilateral incidents “it is customary to be in a neutral territory” a meeting, but did not reveal who are the mediators or in which country would be the possible meeting of foreign ministers.
The relations between La Paz and Mexico are deteriorated since the government of Andrés Manuel López Obrador decided to give Morales asylum after his resignation on November 10.
Mexico also gaven asylum to about twenty officials of the former president in the Mexican residence in La Paz, of which there are only nine to 10 left, according to official sources, including former minister Juan Ramón Quintana.
The government of the interim president of right Jeanine Áñez denied asylees safe-conduct, because it ensures that there is an investigation by the prosecution, mainly, for the crimes of sedition and terrorism, and asks Mexico to hand them over.
The López Obrador administration said that will not deliver and, in any case, he fears that Bolivian security forces break into his residence to detain Morales’ ex-authorities.
Mexico raised a dialogue with Bolivia last week and has a application before the International Court of Justice for the “intimidation and harassment” of his residence.
