NEW YORK — Two elderly women and a man were trapped in a massive sinkhole that opened up in a Long Island front yard Thursday, authorities say.

Suffolk County police say they initially went to a home in Huntington Station just after 6 am on a report of a woman trapped in a hole in the ground. When they arrived, they found her, and two men, in the hole.

The hole was about six feet deep, six feet wide, and was right in the front yard of the single-family home, which Redfin says sits on a 6,970-square-foot lot on West 10th Street.

Police did not say how the three ended up in the hole, or when. A bystander (one thankfully outside the set) helped an officer reach up and pull one of the three to safety, while a second officer took a neighbor’s ladder. The two people left in the hole used that to get out.

The woman and one of the men were taken to a hospital for evaluation, police said. The other man was not injured.

Police say the City of Huntington Building Inspector was called in to assess the property and determine what caused the sinkhole. It was not clear if authorities believed it might have been weather related. Heavy rain moved across parts of Long Island Thursday afternoon and into parts of the late night. The investigation is ongoing.
