First Embraer E2 Series Commercial Flight to London City Airport

The Embraer 190-E2, the second largest version of the E2 series, was approved for use at London City Airport in early June. The London business airport has strict noise regulations, and a fairly steep approach is required to land there.

London City has a runway length of 1,508 meters and has an approach procedure that uses a descent angle of 5.5 degrees, a lot steeper than normal. According to Embraer, the E2 series is ideal for flights from London airport.

A special fact is that Embraer aircraft account for ninety percent of all flight movements from London City Airport. This is mainly due to ‘home carrier’ BA CityFlyer, in addition to Helvetic/SWISS, companies such as KLM Cityhopper and LOT Polish Airlines also use Embraers to the city airport.

E195-E2
Helvetic is therefore the first to fly to London City with the new, more economical and quieter E2 series. Certification of the longer E195-E2 for flights to LCY is still awaited. Embraer expects this to be the case by mid-2022. From then on, KLM Cityhopper can use this new aircraft type to London airport on flights from Schiphol.

The first E190-E2 flight to London City also meant the resumption of scheduled service from Zurich to the British airport. An essential air connection for the financial world has thus been restored.
