Scientists at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have warned that humanity needs to be more careful about the threat of a deadly yeast-like fungus that can also cause a global pandemic.
This fungus enters the bloodstream, then spreads throughout the body and causes serious infections. This type of Candida Auris does not respond to available antifungal medications. The infection is diagnosed only after a blood test, and special laboratory tests are required to detect it.
More tenacious
In the official document it says that the fungus can cause infection of the bloodstream, hearing organs and wound infections. Candida Auris survives on surfaces much longer than other known infections, can be transmitted in hospitals, by contact with contaminated surfaces or equipment in the environment, and from person to person.
– We first encountered the fungus in 2016 during an outbreak in England, and were amazed at its vitality and resistance to treatment, which could cause the next global pandemic, said the British epidemiologist Joanna Rhodes.
A new plague?
The deadly virus is increasingly being compared to the Black Death, or plague, one of the worst pandemics in human history, which killed 50 million people in the 14th century.
The fungus was first discovered in Japan in 2009, and later it turned out that its strains appeared even earlier in South Korea. Candida Auris is currently found in over 30 countries around the world, including America, the United Arab Emirates, Spain and the United Kingdom.
