Last week, the Australian Defense Force presented a report by Australian Supreme Court Judge Paul Brereton, which recommended an investigation of 19 soldiers into the deaths of 39 Afghan civilians between 2005 and 2016.
According to the report, the killing of dozens of civilians was part of an initiation ritual in the Special Operations Task Group of Australia’s elite forces.
According to the newspaper report, eight male and one female soldiers, aged 20 to 50, have committed suicide in the past three weeks. The suicide of nine soldiers made it an unprecedented event in the country’s military history. Although there is no information on whether the soldiers who committed suicide were related to war crimes as in the report, some believe that the investigation and the accompanying coverage by the media may be responsible.
