The drugstore chain took a look at the bathrooms at home.

On the occasion of its 40th birthday, the drugstore chain Bipa looked into the bathrooms of the Austrians. On behalf of Bipa, the market research institute Marketagent asked 1,000 people between the ages of 16 and 69 about personal hygiene and everyday bathroom habits.

Difference between old and young

Probably the most important result of the survey: the Austrians find themselves beautiful. Around 80 percent of all respondents stated that they were either very (18.9 percent) or rather satisfied (61.5 percent) with their appearance. “We are particularly pleased with this result because Bipa has had a decisive influence on body care and body awareness in Austria over the past 40 years,” explains Thomas Lichtblau, spokesman for the management at Bipa.

The numbers also show that older people tend to be more satisfied with their appearance, while the younger generation is more critical of their physical appearance. Personal hygiene and a well-groomed appearance is important to women and men across all generations and genders – women about ten more than men.

Personal hygiene has become more important

The majority of respondents agree that personal hygiene has become increasingly important over time. The use of beauty products is now seen more than ever as a natural part of the morning bathroom routine.

With regard to personal hygiene, cosmetics and beauty, people are generally more informed, spend more money on it and attach greater importance to the topic socially and personally than was previously the case.
The change in time is also evident in 5.5 percent of the men surveyed who stated that they bought their first mascara from Bipa.

Cliché and reality

Mr. and Mrs. Austrians spend five hours a week in front of the bathroom mirror. The survey shows that there are gender-specific differences, but not to the extent that clichés still maintained in some places suggest this.

The facts: At 45 minutes, women only need around nine minutes longer in the bathroom on weekdays than men at 36 minutes. And what do you think of the opposite sex? Here men add another ten minutes and believe that women only come out of the bathroom after 55 minutes during the week. Conclusion: Men and women are really far apart in terms of the length of their morning hygiene and beauty pleasure, neither in mutual assessment nor in reality.

Women spend more

If you are looking for classic roles, you will find what you are looking for when designing the bathroom time. While men and women, unsurprisingly, brush their teeth, do their hair and wash their faces with a similar routine, men fall behind in the disciplines of applying face and body cream. Nevertheless, the former still practice 25 percent of the men surveyed.

There are also differences in the monthly expenses for personal care, cosmetics and beauty. At almost 30 euros, women put their own expenditure ten euros higher than men assume. In contrast, men spend around 40 euros per month on expenses for the whole family, while women spend around seven euros less.

Bipa was mostly there the first time

“Bipa has been supplying and inspiring its customers in the areas of personal care, beauty, perfume and cosmetics for 40 years. Today, as in the past, Bipa stands for joie de vivre, curiosity and inspiration with over 15,000 products and 600 branches,” says Bipa Managing Director Thomas Lichtblau. “It was an occasion for us to take a look at Austria’s bathroom in order to understand our care and bathroom habits even better. But we also asked about the key moments that should not be forgotten – because it was ‘the first time’: the first Deodorant, the first eyeliner, aftershave, condoms – these products and moments are probably often remembered because they meant a step towards growing up for us. We are pleased that many people obviously experienced this moment with and with Bipa . ” (red)
