7am news – Marseille: pneumococcal epidemic on a shipyard

When the whole world only talks about the Chinese coronavirus, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur regional health agency is worried about infection that affects part of the employees of a Marseille shipyard site. It is a pneumococcal bacteria, which caused emergency vaccination of 4,000 employees.

The ARS even speaks of a “major operation”. From February 3, around fifteen teams will be on site to vaccinate these employees. We already count 13 people infected by this bacteria.

Like the Chinese coronavirus, this infection attacks the lungs. The symptoms, at the beginning, are not very worrying: a simple cough and a little fever. However, some patients were hospitalized in serious condition. And with two to four workers per cabin, its spread is extremely rapid.

The origin of this virus is currently unknown. But he could come from finland, where several cases of pneumococci have been discovered in a port. According to Professor Philippe Parola, specialist in infectious diseases at the IHU Méditerranée Infection in Marseille, some of the patients were there : “It’s a track,” he said to West France.
