5 Bad Habits That Increase Osteoporosis Risk

TEMPO.CO, JakartaOsteoporosis is a condition of reduced bone density that easily causes minor accidents that can result in fractures, wrist, spine, and hip injuries. This condition generally occurs after the age of 50 years. However, many experience it before that age due to a poor lifestyle.

“Osteoporosis — loss of bone density and weakening of the skeleton — is a silent disease and doesn’t cause symptoms until a person experiences it broken bones,” says Deborah Sellmeyer, medical director of the Johns Hopkins Metabolic Bone Center.

Here are five habits that damage health bonereported from eatthis.com, Friday, March 18, 2022.

1. Extreme low-calorie diet

A diet that is very low in calories not only leads to poor nutrition, but also makes bone health worse. “Looking at this from a human perspective, even a very nutritious low-calorie diet can have negative effects on bone health, especially when paired with exercise,” says Maya Styner. “This is important to note, especially for women, because as we age, bone health begins to naturally decline. Calorie intake and regular exercise can have a major impact on bone strength and fracture risk.”

2. Sedentary lifestyle

People who do not exercise at all increase the risk of osteoporosis and fractures. “We know that in extreme environments, such as complete rest, bone loss is very high,” said Alexandra Mavroeidi, senior lecturer in physical activity for health at Strathclyde’s School of Psychological Sciences & Health.

“In everyday life, prolonged periods of immobility like this are rare; however, a sedentary lifestyle is common in modern society, through transportation, work, and recreation. Studies have shown that self-reported sedentary behavior throughout the day is as many as six up to eight hours and this increases to eight to 10 hours in older adults. We are the first to show that this type of behavior may have an adverse effect on women’s hip bone mineral density.”

3. Lack of calcium and vitamin D.

Adequate calcium reduces the risk of fractures. “There has been controversy recently about a possible association between calcium supplements and vascular calcification [penyimpanan kalsium di pembuluh darah]but this was seen in one study and hasn’t been seen in many other studies of calcium and vitamin D,” says Sellmeyer.

4. Tobacco and alcohol

Smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages impair bone health and can lead to osteoporosis, according to experts. “Smoking in any amount has a detrimental effect on bone density,” says doctor Scott Boden. “Alcohol intake of more than three ounces per day (or about 2-3 typical drinks) has been shown to increase bone loss,” he says.

Another conclusion, people who smoke tend to drink alcohol, and conversely people who drink alcohol also tend to smoke. “Patients with any of these problems are advised to address these factors as part of their osteoporosis and fracture prevention plan and seek appropriate medical care,” said Boden.

5. Excessive use of antacids

Research has linked excessive use of antacid ulcer medications with a higher risk of osteoporosis. “These antacids potently reduce gastric hydrochloric acid production, possibly attenuating nutrient absorption. Proton pump inhibitors have been repeatedly documented to increase the risk of hip, wrist, and spinal fractures,” says Susan E. Brown.
