“This is the first time, it is a positive development,” said Italian civil protection chief Angelo Borrelli at a press conference.
Another positive signal: the number of patients in intensive care is also decreasing and reached its level “the lowest for a month” (2.573, -62), underlined Mr. Borrelli.
However, Italy registered 454 deaths, bringing the total to 24,114.
The three most affected regions of the peninsula remain Lombardy (north), with 66,971 cases and 12,376 deaths, Emilia-Romagna (north-central, 22,867 cases and 3,079 deaths) and Piedmont (north-west, 21,349 cases and 2,409 dead).
Two new doctors died, bringing the total number of deaths among them to 139, according to the national federation of the orders of doctors (Fnomceo).
On the good news side, the Chinese couple who were the first official cases of coronavirus in Italy in January left the Roman hospital San Filippo Neri on Monday. “They are in excellent health” and wrote a letter of thanks to the health structures that treated them, according to the health manager for the Lazio region, Alessio d’Amato.
According to a study by the National Health Observatory, the regions of southern Italy, the least affected by the pandemic, could reach zero new contagion “between the end of April and the beginning of May”. Lazio, the region of Rome, could arrive there on May 12, and Lombardy, the region of Milan most affected, “not before June 28”.
