4 Million Ukrainians Granted Temporary Protection in EU, as Refugee Numbers in Poland, Estonia, Portugal, and France Decrease

About 4 million Ukrainians have received temporary protection in the EU since February 2022. At the same time, the number of refugees in Poland, Estonia, Portugal and France is decreasing.

This is reported TRAVEL RBC-Ukraine with reference to SchengenVisaInfo.com.

The largest reduction is in Poland and Portugal

According to Eurostat, Germany has granted protection status to 28% of the total number of Ukrainians. This is more than 1 million people. Poland granted protection status to 995,035 persons – 25% of the total. Czech Republic – 331850 Ukrainians, which is 8%.

In Germany, Sweden and the Czech Republic, a slight increase in refugees is recorded.

“The increase in Sweden was mainly due to the delay in the process of restoring temporary protection status, which ended in March 2023. This resulted in the number of registered beneficiaries of temporary protection at the end of March appearing to be lower than it actually was,” explains Eurostat.

At the same time, in some countries the number of Ukrainians with temporary protection has decreased. The largest decline was recorded in Poland, down 4,700, followed by Portugal (-2,520), Estonia (-1,885) and France (-985).

As of April 2023, Ukrainian citizens in the EU accounted for 98% of those granted temporary protection. These are mostly women aged 35 to 64 (48%) and children (35%). Men made up less than a fifth of the total number of refugees – 18%.

At first, Poland was the leader in accepting refugees. Germany has now taken the lead, with more than a million people benefiting from temporary protection, while in Poland the numbers have dropped to 989,080.

Thousands of Ukrainian refugees have left Portugal in recent months. The Portuguese Immigration and Border Service (SEF) recorded that over the past two months the number of refugees from Ukraine has begun to decrease.

Meanwhile, two-thirds of Ukrainians currently in Poland plan to return to Ukraine.
